Key Dreams Fishing Reports 2018

KeyDreams, Sun. 7 Oct. 2018, Flounder Dinner and Shark Catching Birthday Wish Success!

We had a Mom and Dad take their sons out fishing with us a while back for the younger son’s birthday and the older son wanted a fishing trip too!  This time the trip was for the older son and he wanted to catch a Shark for his Birthday.  We had a Beautiful Day with lite winds and calm seas which made it easier for these young anglers to master their fishing techniques.  The Boys showed Mom and Dad how to catch the Flounder today.  We caught 6 Flounder up to 20 inches giving Mom and Dad plenty of Fresh Flounder Fillets for Dinner.  We did have a real big one get off just before it got to the net.  Near the end of the morning trip the Sharks granted the Birthdays Boys wish and came to play.  We caught 3 Sharpnose Sharks to play with and then were released to catch another day.  We didn’t catch any Puppy Drum or Bull Reds today, but they are still here.  We also caught a Spanish Mackerel, Smooth Pufferfish, Seabass and Oyster Toads.  We had a lot of fun with these guys and were looking forward to fishing with them again.  Lots of Fun.

KeyDreams, Thur. 4 Oct 2018, Citation Red Drum, Flounder, and a Couple Rare Catches

We had our Hard-Core Fishing Couple with us again today and they brought a close friend and mate from the Bay Princess a local party boat that they fish on regularly when they are in the mood for Party/Head Boat Fishing.  We had a Beautiful Day with lite winds.  This young lady of 86 wanted to get one more Flounder Trip in before it gets cold.  We caught 5 Flounder today up to 22 inches and as usual this young lady caught the biggest and warmed our hearts with her Excitement and Laughter as the Big Flounder hits the deck.  We also had some Big Bull Red Drum action for the boys.  We landed 3 Big Reds and missed a couple of short runs.  The Big Reds gave the guys a good long hard fight to remember and a chance to hone their skill of fighting Monster Fish on Light Tackle.  The Biggest of the Bull Red Drums was 50 inches and Qualified for the Virginia Big Fish Citation Award.  The Big Reds were all released and swam off strong to fight another day.  We also had a rare for us catch of a Sting Ray (sorry no pic) and a Baby Butterfly Ray (pic posted).  That was only our second Sting Ray we’ve caught in the Chesapeake Bay in over 30 years, and the smallest Butterfly Ray we’ve caught, they are usually about the size of a truck hood or bigger.  Our most common Ray in the Chesapeake Bay is the Cownose Ray.  We also caught Bluefish, Seabass, Smooth Puffer fish, Oyster Toads and such.  Lots of fun.

KeyDreams, Sat. 29 Sept. 2018, Red Drum and Flounder on Chesapeake Bay Couples Day

We had a couple fishing with us this morning who needed a distraction since their daughter just left for college.  First off congratulations to them, hoorah!!!  One cool observation we had out there today was it seemed to Couples Day on the Chesapeake Bay.  We had two couples onboard including Me (Capt.) and my First Mate and the first 5 boats we encountered had one couple each on them.  We caught 3 Bull Red Drum today.  Mom caught the biggest and most, girls won today, and it was a good distraction from missing her daughter.  The Big Reds were released and swam off strong to fight another day.  We also caught a few nice Flounder up to 18 inches for dinner. Lots of fun.

KeyDreams, Wed. 26 Sept. 2018, Cobia, Flounder and Sharks

Today we had a nice day and needed a bait run, so my First Mate and I took advantage of the day.  It was beautiful today with light winds but the swells were bigger today with the incoming tide.  We started looking for some Flounder for dinner and my First Mate caught a surprise Cobia on the first cast.  We caught a few flounder, Sharks, Bluefish, Black Seabass and Oyster toads.

KeyDreams, Sat. 22 Sept. 2018, Red Drum, Flounder and a Smiling Puffer Fish

We had our hard core fishing couple with us again this morning.  The weather including Hurricane Florence had been keeping us from fishing, but when it finally looked fishable we had to go.  It was a Beautiful Sunny Day.  We caught 7 nice Flounder up to 18 inches and put a couple in the cooler.  The Flounder were finicky and the bite was lite resulting in a few lost Flounder.  We also caught a 31 inch Red Drum that wasn’t big enough for the Big Fish Virginia Citation Award ( 46 inches for Red Drum ).  The Big Red may not have won a trophy but it sure gave him a fight to remember and wore him out for a bit.  The Big Red was released and swam off strong to fight another day.  We hooked another Big Red obviously much bigger, but after a couple long runs it pulled the hook and got away.  We also caught lots of the other stuff like Oyster Toads, Seabass a piece of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation and a Strangely Odd Smiling Puffer Fish.  Lots of fun.

KeyDreams, Tues. 28 Aug. 2018, Flounder limit and introducing our New Salty Dog

We had another Beautiful Day and needed to restock our bait.  After catching a couple hundred baitfish we decided to get some more Flounder.  We caught our limit again with 11 Flounder total up to 19 inches today.  Today I caught the most and the biggest, I win, well I guess we both win because we are eating Flounder for dinner again.  This is our new Salty Dog Daisy.  We also caught the normal other stuff like little Seabass, Oyster Toads and such and got back to the dock in under 4 hours.  Lots of Fun, it was another good day for the Key Dreams Crew to play.

KeyDreams, Sun. 26 Aug. 2018, A Day for us to get our Flounder and Spadefish limit

We had a Beautiful Day and no charter scheduled so I took my First Mate out fishing.  It was too nice to stay at the dock.  First we messed around with the Spadefish and caught our limit in 15 minutes, so then we went and caught a limit of Flounder, we caught 11 Flounder total up to 21 inches.  My First Mate caught the Biggest but the Captain caught the most, call it a tie.  We also caught the normal other stuff like little Seabass, Oyster Toads and such and got back to the dock in short order.  Lots of Fun, it was good to have a day for us to play.

KeyDreams, Sat. 25 Aug. 2018, Hard Core Fishing couple gets Flounder and a Cobia

We had our Hard core fishing couple out with us again today.  It was a windy day out of the North East Definitely not our favorite conditions but it was cooler which is what she wanted, we tried to convince them to go Sunday.  We did our best to stay in protected areas to avoid the boat from rocking.  We ended up catching 8 Flounder today with a few for the box.  We also got some Crazy Cobia action today.  They wanted to mess around with the Spadefish but it was just too windy for us.  We also caught a few Lizardfish and the normal other stuff like little Seabass, Oyster Toads and such.  Lots of Fun.

KeyDreams, Sun. 19 Aug. 2018, Flounder, Spadefish and a Fish Dance

We had a Crazy Fun Family get the kids out fishing with us this morning.  It was a beautiful day on the Chesapeake Bay with light SW winds that started off a little cloudy and cool but then got sunny and warm.  We started with the Flounder and got 6 up to 19 inches and 4 in the box.  The youngest one had us in stitches, he said I want to just put my fishing pole in the pole holder because I’m a lazy fisherman, then when we would catch a fish he would do the fish dance. The second half of the morning we messed around with those Crazy Fighting Spadefish and ended up putting 10 in the cooler.  We also caught the normal other stuff like Oyster Toads and such.  Lots of Fun.

KeyDreams, Sat. 18 Aug. 2018, Flounder fishing on windy day.

Today we had Mom and Dad get their grown Son out fishing with us for a Family Fun Flounder Fishing Trip.  The winds were out of the South West which is a good wind direction for fishing the Lower Chesapeake Bay, but they were a bit stronger then we like.  The Day was Beautiful and the wind made it seem not so hot but it does make fishing a bit more difficult.  The waves didn’t bother these guys and we all still had a Fun time.  We caught 12 Flounder today up to 20 inches and 7 for the cooler.  Mom caught the Biggest Flounder today.  The Son caught the most Flounder today which was payback since on the last trip his Dad caught most of the Flounder.  The bite was finicky but they were there.  We also caught the normal variety of the other stuff like Grey Trout, Oyster toads, and such.

KeyDreams, Fri. 17 Aug. 2018, Flounder, Spadefish, Shark, and a Boy Scout Badge

We had a Family Fun Fishing Trip on another Beautiful Day with calm seas and light winds on the Chesapeake Bay.  We got 3 Flounder up to 19 inches and 2 in the box.  We had some Exciting Mayhem with a Black Tip Shark and then briefly had a Big Red Drum Bull run that pulled off.  We messed around with the Spadefish and put 8 in the Cooler.  We came across a good sized Cobia that was fun for everyone to watch but frustrating because he had lock jaw.  We made several attempts with the eel and other live baits, bucktail and even threw cut bait at him and he wouldn’t eat.  The Cobia just wasn’t in the mood so we eventually left him be for another day.  We all had fun and the young man caught his Keeper Flounder for his Boy Scout Fishing Badge.  We also caught the normal other stuff like Seabass, Oyster Toads, an eel and such.  Back to the Dock around noon and beat the Afternoon Thunderstorm.  Lots of Fun.

KeyDreams, Thurs. 16 Aug. 2018, Flounder and Spadefish and Bucket list checked

We had a Family Fishing trip outing that was on Grandpa’s Bucket list.  It was a beautiful day with light winds and calm seas on the Chesapeake Bay.  We ended up catching 9 Flounder up to 20 inches and 5 for the cooler today.  We messed around with the Spadefish and ended up with 10 in the box.  Grandpa was the Joke teller of the family and he got the Biggest Flounder and the Biggest Spadefish, Woo Woo Go Grandpa.  We also caught the normal other stuff like little Seabass, Croaker, Oyster Toads and such.  Lots of Fun.

KeyDreams, Sat. 11 Aug. 2018, Limit of Spadefish

We had a Dad to get his boys out fishing with Key Dreams this morning.  It was an overcast morning that finally gave way to sunny skies with light South winds.  We starting with the Spadefish and the bite was picky and the hookups came slower than usual but they still got their limit of Spadefish for the Cooler.  We spent the remaining time of the morning focused on Flounder but they weren’t snapping.  We did see a couple of Cobia swimming together but they didn’t eat the eel today.  We also caught the normal other stuff like Oyster Toads, Croakers and such and got back to the dock before it Hot and avoided the Afternoon Showers and T-Storms.  Lots of Fun.

KeyDreams, Fri. 10 Aug. 2018, Spadefish Boat Limit, Flounder and a Cobia

Today we had a Group of friends get out fishing with us for some Spadefish and Flounder Fishing.  It was beautiful today with light winds keeping it calm on the bay today.  We started with those Crazy Fighting Spadefish.  It didn’t take long and they were in the groove and we caught our 8 person Boat Limit.  We shifted over to Flounder Fishing and got a half dozen flounder up to 19 inches with 3 of them keepers.  We also caught Bluefish and a keeper Black Seabass.  We also got the Cobia Surprise and some reel screaming action.  We also caught the normal variety of the other stuff like Oyster toads, small Sea bass.

KeyDreams, Mon. 06 Aug. 2018, Cobia, Spadefish Boat Limit, and a Bonus Prize

We had a family outing for Mom and Dad to get the girls out fishing with Key Dreams this morning.  It was a beautiful day with light winds, super calm and Glassy in some areas.  We started looking for Flounder and got some Flounder action but they were coming up short.  As we were heading to another hot spot we saw a couple small Cobia while cruising.  After doing some more Flounder fishing we decided to take a detour and play with the Cobias on the way to the next spot.  The first Cobia we saw look like it may be big enough so we flipped eels on it 3 times with no response, we were about to try a fourth time and a center console cruised up and flipped their eel at it and again they had no luck with it either.  We moved on and saw a few more small ones that wouldn’t eat.  We were almost back to our next fishing hot spot and we found about 20 Cobia’s packed up.  There was one that looked big enough to keep in the middle of the pack.  Surprisingly it took a few tries to get her hooked.  It was kind a crazy watching the small cobia grab the eel by the tail and drag it away from the pack and just drop it never having the hook in its mouth and swimming back to the pack.  The 3rd or 4th attempt landed rite on top of the biggest one in the middle of the pack and she sucked it up with-out hesitation.  The pack tightly followed the big one we had hooked and it was crazy fun trying to get another one hooked up while they all followed in plain view but they kept either ignoring the eel or dragging it away, like Spawning bass clearing their bed.  One finally pulled the eel off so I quickly grabbed a live bait and got one to hit but he missed the hook.  Started to get nervous about losing the one we had on the hook so we netted it and they left.  Since we did hook the biggest one in the group of about 20 of them and it was only 41 inches I’m pretty sure we got the only keeper out of that bunch.  It was fun playing with them be we decided to get back to Flounder Fishing and got a nice eating size Bluefish and a Triggerfish.  Then we finished up by going after those Crazy Fighting Spadefish and ended up catching our Boat limit of Spadefish.  We also caught the normal other stuff like little Seabass, Oyster Toads and another baby Sea Donkey.  Oh yea the Bonus Prize we saw floating on our way south and the Kids were excited about the rare catch (see pic).  Lots of Fun.

KeyDreams, Sun. 05 Aug. 2018, Flounder, Limit of Spadefish and a Rock

Today we had a Father get his sons out fishing with us for some Spadefish and Flounder Fishing.  We caught some Flounder up to 19 inches and their limit of Spadefish. While Flounder fishing the younger son had a heavy one on and finally got it up and to our surprise it was a Rockfish (see picture).  The older son had a nice one on fighting like a big doormat Flounder but when it got near the boat it went crazy and ran straight under the boat screaming line and got cut off by the running gear under the boat, never got a chance to see it so the Sea Monster got away this time.  It was beautiful today with light winds keeping it calm on the bay today.  We also caught the normal variety of the other stuff like Bluefish, Oyster toads, small Sea bass and even a surprise little Sea Donkey (Amberjack).

KeyDreams, Wed. 01 Aug. 2018, Flounder, Spadefish Boat Limit plus

We had a Group of Business Associates here for meeting get out fishing with Key Dreams this morning.  It was a beautiful day but the South West winds were a bit stronger then we like but still fishable.  We started with the Flounder again this morning which resulted in throwback flounder and toads.  We picked the pace up with the Spadefish.  These guys quickly got the hang of the bite and got their boat limit of 28 Spadefish for the Cooler and Catch and Released 4.  Lots of Fun.

KeyDreams, Tues. 31 July 2018, Limit of Spadefish

We had a family group outing today getting the kids out fishing for a morning trip.  It was a cloudy morning with light SW winds and flat calm on the bay most of the morning.  Showers and storms were hanging south of us, but we got lucky and only got a sprinkling at the end of the trip.  We fished for Flounder for a short period of time and the youngest had the most action catching some jumbo oyster toads.  The Flounder were being stubborn so it wasn’t long before we ended up fishing for the Spadefish.  We messed around with the Spadefish and ended up putting Limit of Spadefish in the box.  Lots of Fun.

KeyDreams, Sun. 15 July 2018, Limit of Spadefish

We had a family join us today to get the Kids out fishing.  It was a Beautiful Day with SW winds but just enough to keep it from getting hot out there on the bay.  We fished for Flounder for a little bit but the ground fish bite was off.  We messed around with the Spadefish for a while putting some in the Box then hunted around again for some Flounder.  The ground bite was still off, maybe the big swells from the recently passing by Offshore Hurricanes Chris and Beryl had something to do with it, anyway we went back to messing with those Crazy fighting Spadefish and finished up having caught our Boat limit.  Lots of Fun with a Fun Family.

KeyDreams, Sat. 14 July 2018, Limit of Spadefish and a Cobia

After a brief Northeast Blow shutting us down for a couple days and Hurricane Chris passing by offshore gave us some swells but nothing to keep us from getting out there for some more fishing.  Today we had a regular return from New Jersey again to fishing with us.  Last year she got her Cobia and Flounder she wanted, and this year we put them on their Boat Limit of Spadefish and she also got her a 41 inch Cobia this year.  It was Beautiful Day on the Chesapeake Bay and a Fun Time with Good People.

KeyDreams, Summary May 2018,

When the wind blew it blew hard in all directions with short interludes of calm seas.  Near the end of May the weather started to get more stable like it’s trying to get into the summer pattern, then Tropical Strom Alberto hits Florida and gives us tons of rain for the tail end of May.

The Tog season was extended to May 15 giving us two more weeks to catch them up.  The Croaker started bighting good around the middle of May.  Flounder bight was tough but a few nice fish were caught, our largest for May was 18 inches.  The Flounder bite picked up real good June 1st last year and got better as the water warmed up.  Red Drum have been cruising into the Bay coming up the coast real good the last couple of weeks along with the Cobia.  Cobia season opens June 1st this year.  Here is a picture of a Citation Red Drum we caught.  Overall we had Lots of fun with Great People.
